HYDRAULIC CLUTCH

(updated 7/16/03)

As you may know if you have followed any of the progress while I've built my car,

that I had originally installed a cable clutch setup from Modern Driveline. Which did

NOT work on my car.  Primarily due to the long tube Hooker headers I use. The

headers kept melting the cable housing, which seized the whole cable assembly.

Therefore, I have changed the clutch cable setup to HYDRAULIC. Here is the story!

Ok here goes guys and gals. We got the new hydraulic clutch kit in and started tearing

out the USELESS cable setup. They may work well on some cars but not on mine!

The installation went pretty smooth for the firewall and clutch pedal part. Then came

the lower slave unit. The guy (John at John's Mustang's) said, "Oh since you are using

a Scattershield you'll have to cut out the clutch arm hole a little, so the arm on the

slave unit will fit into the 2nd hole on the clutch depression arm." WELL....his definition

of a "little" ended up to be a piece of 1/4 explosion proof scattershield approximately

2"x 1 1/2" in size. I am here to tell you friends, that trying to cut a CHUNK that big

out of a scattershield that is already in the car, is NOT EASY. Do it OUT of the CAR

if you have a choice.

Then came the instructions for BLEEDING the clutch cylinder, what a JOKE. Talk

about nebulous that's an understatement. Finally after 2 days of screwing with it, we

finally got the system bleed and working properly. BUT I must admit, that after it

was all done it WORKS BEAUTIFULLY! Smooth and fairly easy to push considering

the H.D. clutch setup I have in mine. Of course the wife probably wouldn't like it,

it's still tuff to hold down for long at stop lights but it works and well.

Below is a photo, that if you look carefully, below and to the right of the master-cylinder

you'll see the new hydraulic clutch cylinder. This is a terrific system and it works beautifully.

The second photo shows the small hydraulic fluid reservoir. The last one shows the actual

slave cylinder mounted to the scattershield and clutch arm. A fine system but POOR instructions!
